What Interior Car Detailing Costs

What interior car detailing costs, why the state the car is in does not change the number here, and an honest account of what doing it yourself involves.

Interior, Pricing

How much does interior car detailing cost?

Interior car detailing costs $240 for a sedan, $270 for a mini SUV and $288 for a full-size SUV or four-door truck. Those are flat rates, not starting points, and the state the car is in does not change them.

That last part is worth reading on for, because it is where most of the confusion about detailing prices comes from.

What changes the price, and what does not

Size changes it. Three rows of seats and a cargo area take longer than a sedan, so a full-size SUV is $48 more. That is the entire pricing model.

Here is what does not change it:

  • Pet hair. A golden retriever’s worth of hair ground into the back seats is part of the job, not a surcharge on top of it.
  • Mold. Including the kind that has been growing under a floor mat since last winter.
  • Smoke. Smoke is genuinely harder than the rest, because it is in the headliner and the vents rather than on the surfaces. It still costs the same.
  • Spills. Milk, coffee, fast food, sand all the way through the carpet.
  • How long it has been. A car nobody has cleaned in five years costs the same as one detailed last spring.

A heads-up when you book is appreciated, because it tells us what we are walking into and how much time to set aside. It does not change what you pay. If it did, the price list would not be worth publishing.

Two things do reduce it. Book two or more vehicles at the same time and each one drops $15, and there is 10% off for military and police, current or retired.

Why quotes elsewhere vary so much

If you have rung round and got numbers between $90 and $400 for what sounds like the same job, that is not because some of them are ripping you off. It is because detailers price in genuinely different ways.

Hourly. Honest, and impossible to budget for. The final number depends on how bad the car turns out to be, which you find out at the end.

“Starting at.” The quote you are given is for the best case. Pet hair, stains and odour are added on inspection. This is the most common model and the main reason people feel ambushed by a detailing bill.

Flat rate by size. What we do. You get the number before anyone looks at the car, and the risk of it being worse than expected sits with us rather than with you.

Shop versus mobile also moves it, in both directions. A shop has rent to cover. A mobile detailer has to bring water and power, which is its own cost, but no premises.

None of these is dishonest. They are just not comparable, so comparing the headline numbers tells you very little. Ask whichever detailer you are talking to which of the four they are quoting.

Interior only, or the whole car?

Worth doing the arithmetic, because booking both separately costs more than booking them together:

VehicleInteriorExteriorBoth separatelyFull detail
Sedan$240$138$378$360
Mini SUV$270$150$420$390
Full-size SUV$288$186$474$408

So if the outside needs doing at some point anyway, doing it in the same visit saves between $18 and $66 over two separate bookings. If the paint is genuinely fine and only the cabin is bothering you, interior only is the right purchase and we are not going to talk you into more.

What it costs to do it yourself

A fair question, and the answer is not “nothing”.

The work itself is not difficult. Most of it is patience. What makes the difference between a tidy car and a detailed one is equipment: a wet extractor to pull water and dissolved dirt back out of the fabric, a steamer for what has soaked in, compressed air for the vents and seat rails, and a set of brushes in different stiffnesses. Hire shops rent extractors, which is how most people who do this themselves get hold of one.

The real cost is hours. An interior takes us two to three hours with the right kit and a lot of repetition behind us. Doing it properly for the first time, by hand, with a hire machine you are learning as you go, is most of a day. That is our honest estimate rather than a measured figure, but it is the part people underestimate, not the products.

It is worth doing yourself if you enjoy it, or if the car mostly needs a thorough clean rather than extraction and steam. It is worth paying for if there is pet hair, if something has gone through to the underlay, if there is a smell, or if your Saturday is worth more to you than the difference.

What the money actually buys

Every surface inside the car cleaned by hand rather than vacuumed and wiped. Seats move forward and back, mats come out, compressed air clears the vents and rails, steam lifts what has soaked into the fabric, and an extractor pulls the water back out so nothing is left damp. Leather is cleaned and conditioned, plastics cleaned without being left greasy, glass done last.

The interior detailing page walks through the order the work happens in and why it matters, and the full price list has every other service on it.

If you want a straight answer about your own car, send a photo of the inside to 360-335-4468. We will tell you which service it needs, and if a wash and a vacuum would genuinely do the job, we will tell you that instead.
